Bjorkestra is back with Madonna and George Michael this Sunday; and a Buffy opp!

There is so much to tell you about Sunday’s Madonna/George Michael show “Something Sacred” featuring the 18-piece Florida Bjorkestra and a special choir from One City Chorus.

If you haven’t seen a Bjorkestra show, what are you waiting for? Both Creative Loafing and TB Times are raving. Here’s what the Loaf said:

Florida Björkestra If the phrase “gender fluidity” freaks you … out, then get your vulnerable ass out of your comfort zone and into a seat at Hough Hall, where one of the Bay area’s most dynamic ensembles (The Florida Björkestra) explores the music of Madonna and George Michael. Brian Baez will sing Madonna (Björkestra fans may recognize Baez from a turn singing “Spike” at the 15-piece band’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer concert) while Jamie Perlow sings George.

And here’s what Jay Cridlin said in TBT:

For their next trick, the community alt-pop symphony known as the Florida Bjorkestra is getting creative: a concert featuring the songs of Madonna and George Michael, with gender-flipped singers for each artist. Which means you might hear Father Figure performed by Jamie Perlow or Vogue sung by Brian Baez, all backed by the 18-piece Bjorkestra. “We’re not changing lyrics to re-gender the songs,” said founder Jeremy Douglass. “Men sing love songs to men. Women sing love songs to women. .?.?. There’s really no lyrical content that prohibits swapping genders of the leads if you approach the whole concept with an open mind.

Another good reason to get there Sunday April 15 at 6 – aside from the roving drag queens and the big Vogue video that features everyone from the Mayor of St. Pete to the cast of American Stage’s The Producers – is a chance to buy pre-sale tickets to BuffyFest on September 29.

Nicholas Brendan, who played Xander in the hit series, will be the special guest at this year’s BuffyFest. He recorded a special invitation to BuffyFest that’s up on the Bjorkestra Facebook page.

The Bjorkestra will again recreate the legendary Buffy musical episode, along with hits from some of the stars who played The Bronze nightclub.

Tickets go on sale to the public on April 20, but everyone who buys a ticket for the April 15 show will have first shot at tickets for BuffyFest. Follow this link for tickets to Something Sacred: The Florida Bjorkestra does Madonna & George Michael.
