We had so much fun last fall with the kickoff party for John Capouya’s book, Florida Soul, that we decided we’d make our summer season one big soul party in the Side Door Cabaret.
We’re calling it “Summer of Soul,” and our focus, like John’s book, is on some great Florida-based performers. Our season starts on Friday, July 27 with our fave jazz sax man Jeremy Carter doing a show called “The Soul of Jazz” and ends on Saturday, Sept. 15 with the Sarasota Soul Diva Lauren Mitchell and her band, showcasing her hot new album.
On Aug. 4 we’re bringing back Little Jake and the Soul Searchers, from Gainesville – he sold-out John’s book release party – and the Blues Hall of Famer, Latimore, will be playing the Side Door on Saturday, Aug. 25.
And John Capouya will be here for the Little Jake and Latimore shows signing and selling copies of Florida Soul, a book that tracks Florida’s musical pioneers from Ray Charles to K.C. and the Sunshine Band.
We’ve got tributes to Cannonball Adderley and Nancy Wilson (in the same show featuring Jack Wilkins and Whitney James) and visits from Damon Fowler, Selwyn Birchwood (two nights!), a Sunday evening with the Right Rev. Billy C. Wirtz, and a big double-bill featuring The Dukes of Juke and the great horn band, Blue Dice.
For jazz lovers we’ve also got Nate Najar and Phil Fest doing a soulful night of Bossa Nova Guitars. And for the ladies, an all-female comedy night called Girls Night Out.
