Soul legend Latimore makes a rare Tampa Bay appearance Saturday in the Side Door

Latimore, I learned from John Capouya’s book, Florida Soul, doesn’t play where he lives, and since he lives in Riverview, that means the Blues Hall of Famer and veteran soul man doesn’t play in Tampa Bay. Except this Saturday night, when Latimore and his band take the stage in the Palladium’s intimate Side Door Cabaret.

“I keep my personal life separate from show business, that’s the way I’ve been able to stay in it so long,” Latimore told Capouya.

But he’s coming out for this show (with his Chicago-based touring band) because the Palladium is celebrating John’s book – he’ll be at the show selling and signing copies – and we’ve dubbed our entire summer series as “Summer of Soul.”  Capouya’s book chronicles soul artists from the Sunshine State from Ray Charles through KC and the Sunshine Band. And Latimore is one of the stars of the book.

Here’s a bit of background on his career from Florida Soul:

His composition and signature song “Let’s Straighten It Out,” was a #1 R&B hit in 1974 and is still heard on R&B and “Quiet Storm” radio programs. Two TV appearances offer more evidence of his career longevity: He sang his “Somethin’ ‘Bout ‘Cha” on American Bandstand in 1977, and in 2014, he sat in with the Roots on The Tonight Show, timed to the release of a Latimore greatest hits album. His song “Move and Groove Together” had an even longer half-life; released in 1968, it was heard forty-five years later in the hit Netflix series Orange is the New Black.

Latimore is a first-rate keyboard player and singer and he’s in great form, and performing with his touring band from Chicago.  Come out and celebrate a life of soul music and catch this rare Tampa Bay performance.
