Palladium Jazz Awards will honor Billy Pillucere, a talent who left us much too soon

We’re celebrating our vibrant jazz community on Sunday, Jan. 12 with our first Palladium Jazz Awards concert. In the tradition of the John Lamb Birthday Party and our Bob Seymore retirement concert, this show will feature a multitude of great players in various settings in Hough Hall, followed by a jam session in the Side Door.

Our first honorees are Kitty Daniels and Majid Shabazz, two longtime favorites from Tampa, and St. Pete based photographer Herb Snitzer, famous for his images of jazz players from the ’50s and ’60s.  Sadly, we are adding another name to that list – bassist Billy Pillucere. I doubt there was a more beloved figure in the jazz scene than Billy. His unexpected passing this week has touched everyone who knew him or heard him.

I wanted to share this message from the Al Downing Tampa Bay Jazz Association about Billy: “Billy leaves behind many adoring fans. Billy died suddenly though he had been dealing with illness for quite some time. More information will be shared about the celebration of Billy’s life as details are developed.”

We will take a moment during the concert to remember Billy. I hope you can be there to help us celebrate our jazz award winners and our pal, Billy Pillucere.
