Guest Blogger Joe Popp checks in from somewhere “Over America,” and talks of coming to the Side Door June 9th

I am very excited to be playing the Palladium! This show, as has been the case for all of my USA tour dates before and after, are part of my web series Popp Over America! (More on that below). For this Side Door show, I will be performing solo acoustic rock versions of songs from all of my bands – old and new (more on them below), as well as songs from theater compositions I have written (and more on those below). Another cool thing is that the opening acts for the Palladium show are guys that I’ve known for 25 years – Scott Harrell and John McNicholas. We all played in the 90s Tampa music scene together.

OK, here’s that ‘more below’ you’ve been wondering about…

I lived in Tampa Bay from 1990 – 2000 and I had much of my artistic success here. I performed in two punkish outfits: dogs on ice and my own eponymous band, Joe Popp. Both bands played in St. Pete often, most notably at the State Theater and Janus Landing. The bands served as opening acts for Green Day, Blink 182, Cheap Trick, Joan Jett, and Mike Watt.

In the mid-90s I got involved with theater which led me to being the composer for American Stage in the Park’s version of Macbeth in 1997. My band served as the Witches for the production. If you were here and saw the show, you will remember that the show was a huge success and likely still holds the attendance record for the American Stage’s annual “in the park” productions.

I moved to NYC in 2000 and continued in music and theater. In music, I formed several bands, The Hornrims, Plasma in the Ukraine, and Lost Axis and released several albums. In theater, I collaborated with Rinne Groff (Compulsion) and Michael Friedman (Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson) on the production of In the Bubble at Northwestern University. The show was directed by Michael Greif (Rent, Grey Gardens, Next to Normal).

This current project, Popp Over America, of which as I mentioned, my Palladium show will be part, is the story of me touring on my motorcycle as a singer songwriter. I’m visiting all 48 continental US states, writing and performing original music as I go. I am currently seven states into the trip and look forward to returning to Tampa Bay — the place that shaped me so much as an artist!

So after all that, if you didn’t know me and this was the first you’re hearing about the me and the show, what would I tell you as the reason you should come to the show? Hmmm. How about this: “See a guy that drives around the country on a motorcycle and plays some cool, aggressive acoustic rock songs.”
